Reducing the risk of HAIs is the responsibility of all staff within a health-care organization—this includes both direct and indirect patient care staff. The challenge requires the prevention of infections that can be acquired in a health-care organization and introduced to the organization by patients and visitors.
Disinfection of non-critical environmental surfaces and equipment is an essential component of an infection prevention program. Non-critical environmental surfaces and non-critical medical equipment surfaces may become contaminated with infectious agents and may contribute to cross-transmission by acquisition of transient hand carriage by health care personnel. Disinfection should render surfaces and equipment free of pathogens in sufficient numbers to prevent human disease (i.e. hygienically clean).
After completing the consultation, the participant should be able to: ·Identify the challenging standards related to the control of infection. ·Identify methods to reduce or prevent the transmission of infection. ·Describe the new Joint Commission scoring methodology. ·Best available products to reduce/prevent HAIs. ·Identify the cycle or chain of infection and how to break it. Target Audience: This consultation is relevant to those responsible for the prevention and control of infections, including managers and supervisors, along with training, infection control, patient safety and quality improvement professionals.
